The Office of Education Science and Technology of the Organization of American States, provided advice on the inclusion of Biotechnology in the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) Program of the OAS, as ell as for young scientists in the region. It was recommended the creation of their own micro enterprises. The OEST cooperated with the organization of videoconferences, and is building on the experience to design on-line training courses in several countries that target young entrepreneurs interested in the application of biotechnology in their enterprises. The Office secured the participation in these events of biotechnology entrepreneurs and researchers, facilitated experience exchange among participants, in addition to promoting joint working partnerships, particularly in the area of commercialization methodologies for biotechnology-based products, which is considered a problem area in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Business Labs project is one area in which focus can turn to biotechnology in applicable regions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) YABT Online Course can easily be adapted to include a module to train interested participants on biotech business opportunities. The YABT Platform will also contain all relevant information, contacts, chats, and forums, acting as an invaluable tool to the young entrepreneur within the biotech industry. It is clear that YABT’s involvement within the biotech sector will not only provide the necessary resources, but foster even more new business development in the Americas. |
